The Last Great Assault: DoubleDave's THIS Saturday May 28th, 7pm

The Last Great Assault

Saturday, May 28, 2011 at 7pm
DoubleDave’s PizzaWorks

DoubleDave’s is becoming quite the hangout! Not only does it have the best karaoke in town--our opinion, but we will be taking that to a vote soon--with Variety Sounds every Tuesday and Friday night, it will soon also feature Open Mic Night with Jarrod Sterrett on Thursdays (starting June 9th) and live music on Saturdays.

The live music will kick off THIS Saturday with one of Huntsville’s most successful bands—THE LAST GREAT ASSAULT! The Last Great Assault has played multiple times in practically every music venue in Huntsville and the surrounding areas, and was even a part of Warped Tour a couple of years ago.  Slumber Party Theater interviewed them in 2008 and it’s still on the internet! Watch it HERE.

Click HERE to visit their Myspace and HERE for a sample of more of their music and music videos. If you are in town this Saturday, you should definitely go and check this out!

DoubleDave’s special:
$6.00 one topping large pizza
50 cent wings

Crazy Small Town Coincidences-The Circle of the Boxes

The following story is an example of one of the many strange coincidences that can happen when you live in a small town (WARNING: I may be the only one amused by this situation):
I am currently moving from one apartment to another in Huntsville—for about the millionth time—and my future roommate, Derrick, offered to give me boxes that his mom gave him for the big move. I picked the boxes up from him last night, and then I met another friend, Jason, for a late night walk on the track.
While I was tying my shoes, Jason peeked into the window and said, “Hey! We have that same kind of boxes at work!” It took us only a minute longer to realize that the boxes in my backseat were the SAME ones that he had given to his co-worker—Derrick’s mother. UNTIL THAT VERY MOMENT, neither of us had even known that the other was in any way connected to Derrick! Jason had been collecting boxes for Derrick’s mother, Derrick’s mother gave them to Derrick, Derrick gave them to me, and then I met with Jason WITH THE BOXES IN MY BACK SEAT.

What is even stranger, is that I usually get my moving boxes from Jason and his second place of employment ANYWAY!
It is this kind of random string of coincidences that make me love living in Huntsville, and again, I am probably the only one who finds this amusing! =)

End of Finals Bash--Jolly Fox and One Legged Crow

Now, even though I have lived in Huntsville for over seven years, I have only been to The Jolly Fox once and never to the One Legged Crow. That is because I am admittedly a bit of a nerd and a bore, and I have always considered those bars to be a bit too much of the “Frat Pack” scene for my taste. However, since we are now covering the Huntsville night life, I am now using this as a reason to broaden my outlook and visit places that I would not normally visit. The Jolly Fox and the One Legged Crow are popular enough to NOT need our free publicity, but I still wanted to check it out for myself anyway.

So, even though I feel two years too old for The Jolly Fox and One Legged Crow, I made my way there with several friends, and I was pleasantly surprised. Any place with shuffleboard and darts is immediately cool in my book, and I feel cheated that no one ever informed me of this before.

Last night was their “End of Finals Bash,” and it had cheap drinks (I enjoyed the orange Sky vodka with Sprite), live music, and hip hop DJ B.J Kalido. The One Legged Crow had acoustic artists Glen Paulk and Clayton Gardner, and they were good! They were probably also wondering about the creeper who was taking pictures of them. HINT: It was me.

Glen Paulk:

Clayton Gardner:

Overall all, it was a fun night, and I wasn’t the oldest girl in the bar. I met some very rad grandmothers who were apparently kicked out of The Stardust Room for being too awesome. I was not surprised—the Stardust Room is notorious for kicking out people for knowing how to have a good time.

Tuesday Night: Double Dave's with Variety Sounds, Lizard's, and Time Out!

Last night was “Twisted Tuesday” at Double Dave’s with Variety Sounds, and we had one heck of a good time!
Starting at 7:00pm and lasting until 10:00pm, Double Dave’s had discounted All You Can Eat pizza rolls ($5.00 for the ladies and $6.00 for the men) with your first drink for free and drink specials until close. There was also karaoke hosted by Variety Sounds. By 7:30pm, almost all of the seats were filled, and it was obvious from the crowds singing that everyone had a great time last night.
Variety Sounds has over 10,000 songs to choose from, and they get bonus points for sharing my love for 80s classic rock!
We took pictures and video of last night’s festivities. Unfortunately, it was the first test of my new camera’s video feature, and it failed miserably (or I did). The sound on the camera couldn’t handle the speakers, and so everyone sounds like they are singing into an extremely old CB radio.
Therefore, the video that I have did everyone a great disservice—except for the video of me, which was greatly improved by the muffling of my terrible singing voice. The video is having trouble loading, but I am going to keep trying to get it posted.
These boys melted my heart with their terrific performance of Achy Breaky Heart:

This random stranger knew how to really strike a pose while singing:

This guy was the best/most enthusiastic dancer I have ever seen in my entire life. I wish I had figured out how to use the video feature sooner, because no sound is required to enjoy his mad skills!

Don’t be too disappointed if you missed “Twisted Tuesday”! Variety Sounds will be back at Double Dave’s this Friday at the same time and with the same great discounts. I am going to have to make it to the gym tonight for sure, or else I am going to starting looking like a giant pizza roll after all of the good food I have been eating lately!
After Double Dave’s, we headed over to Lizards for a bit to check out the last Open Mic Night with Jarrod Sterrett. We watched Jarrod perform, and it was great. We wish him great success with his future projects.
We left Lizard’s early, because we were still in the mood for karaoke, and so we headed over to Time Out. The crowd was small since it was Tuesday, but it was still a fun time. Sunday and Monday are the best nights to go if you are serious about your karaoke--cash prize to the best singer!
These two strangers definitely sang like they were in love. If I DID know them, they would probably be my second all time favorite couple:

Did you know that Dancing Debbie also knows how to sing?

The Last Open Mic of Lizard's: Tuesday, May 10

For the past 7 years, Lizard's has held open mic night on Tuesdays. Singer/songwriters, bands, and even poets have graced the stage over the years. Sadly, this week will be the last open mic. We have no word on whether there will be a new host in the future or whether this is in fact the very last. All we know is that our cowboy friend Jarrod Sterrett will be taking his leave as host after this Tuesday's session.

Jarrod Sterrett, host of open mic

So this Tuesday night, be sure to stop by Lizard's. Bring your instruments and vocal chords and reminisce with old friends and performers. Let's help this thing go out with a bang, friends. Seeya there!

Random Tuesday Night in Huntsville, TX!

Last night, we made our way to The Draft Bar (as promised) to check out the live music from Jake Muennink. While there, we listened to him and his guitar as we played some Buzztime trivia. He sang and strummed out familiar country songs—don’t ask me to name any of them, though—with a pleasant country twang. We still don’t know much about Jake Muennink… except now we know that he IS in fact worth checking out. For free or otherwise!

In case you weren’t aware, The Draft Bar has free Buzztime Trivia every Tuesday! If you are a fan of useless facts (I know I am), then test your knowledge with some free Buzztime Trivia! Just ask your waitress for a play thingy! That is the official name for THIS:

Jake Muennink was a busy boy last night. After his two hour set at The Draft Bar, he performed again at Lizard’s Open Mic night. We promise we didn’t purposely stalk him! Lizard’s is just our usual Tuesday spot, and it should be yours too! Jarrod Sterret’s Open Mic Night at Lizard’s needs more regular attendees!

Things to do on Cinco De Mayo (May 5)

On May 5 (this coming Thursday), the masses will be headed to the Mexican restaurants and to the bars to celebrate... wait, let me look it up... Just kidding! On this day, we will be celebrating the Mexican army's victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. I lied. I was not kidding and had to look that up. In reality, most of us are celebrating another excuse to drink and over-indulge. Here are some places holding special events for Cinco de Mayo to help you along the path to drunken victory:

Time Out (613 S I45) will be having a free buffet courtesy of Fuzzy's Tacos from 5 - 7 PM. They will have $3 margaritas, Coronas, and tequila shots. They will also have a $200 karaoke contest.

The Jolly Fox (2504 SH Ave) will be having a concert (Randy Rogers, Wade Bowen, John Slaughter). Doors open at 5 PM. There will be crawfish while supplies last. Tickets are $15 in advance. More info: www.jollyfoxclub.com

We will be adding to this list if we find out about other events and specials, so stay tuned - because no one else publishes these things online anywhere! Feel free to email us if you would like to add something to this list. Seeya around!
