Cody Miles & Irrelevent @ Avenue L Coffee House (Sat., Feb. 25)

On Sat., Feb. 25, starting at 8p, you can catch a free show featuring Irrelevent and Cody Miles at Avenue L. Irrelevent, a 2-man group from Dallas, describe themselves as "a Grass Roots rap project." Cody Miles is performing solo this show (and currently working on an album called Apocrypha - to be released in April), but he is also in a group called Kenosis.

For more info on these guys, go see them on the 25th! (And click the links above, of course!)

Cody sent us a couple mp3s to put here on the blog, but since we can't easily upload those mp3s, here are a few examples of their music found on YouTube:

Aftermath: Sammypalooza 2011

Last weekend, we headed to SHSU's Johnson Coliseum for the 2nd annual Sammypalooza. There was a decent turnout, and hopefully, this event will continue to grow. Sammypalooza is free to SHSU students, faculty, and staff - and tickets are available to the public for a fee.

When we first arrived, there were vendors giving out free food and student organizations handing out info.
After our photographer helped himself to a free hot dog, we watched Phil Pritchett on the outdoor stage. Sammy Bearkat showed up for a while. He appeared to be blown away by the speaker volume.
We then went backstage to meet some of the guys from Vertical Horizon. We think someone put Vertical Horizon's dressing room sign by the elevator to be funny, but it could have just been a coincidence.
The members of Vertical Horizon were very kind, and we liked what we heard during their interviews. Meagan Ellsworth from The Huntsville Item was there to interview the bands. She and Matt Scannell totally showed each other photos of their dogs.
After we met with Vertical Horizon, we headed back outside to check out Oh, Sleeper. The crowd seemed to really enjoy this band. The guys stuck around afterward to take photos with fans and give autographs.

At 7p, the coliseum opened for the final two bands - Vertical Horizon and Taking Back Sunday. Fans waited around patiently for the bands. Well, most of the fans were patient, anyway. Some of them were mean mugging our photog.

Taking Back Sunday was the headliner. The singer kept swinging his mic around and almost hit our photographer in the face. It was probably a good thing that we were only allowed behind the barricade for 3 songs.

Overall, Sammypalooza was a success, and it was fun. The show did not sell out, but hopefully, it will continue to grow and more students will stick around for it instead of running home on the weekends. The organizations on campus worked hard to put together an excellent event that was free to students. Thanks for having us, SHSU!

The Beadles LIVE @ Lizard's (Fri., Sept. 9)

This Friday, Sept. 9, The Beadles, a Beatles cover band from Houston, will play at Lizard's starting at 10pm. We caught them last time they played Huntsville, and they were a lot of fun. If you don't remember hearing about their last show here, it may be because they played under the name "The Sweetsops" last time. No matter which name they stick with, they'll still provide a few hours of great covers of The Beatles and other 60s bands.

This show is FREE. In fact, there is live music for free every Friday at Lizard's.

To check out The Beadles, click here - or see their Sweetsops page here.

As always, add us on Facebook to keep up with events and info for Hville and the surrounding areas: Click this.

Avenue L Coffee House has changed locations!

Avenue L has changed locations! It is now located at 1215 Sam Houston Avenue (between the Donut Wheel and the Courthouse). I have yet to see the new location, but from what I've heard, this new venue is a much larger building. However, its move closer to Downtown Huntsville means that there is less parking. Good thing that a little walking is good exercise!

Since Avenue L is strictly volunteer based, the hours of operation have yet to be determined. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, there is a Volunteer Interest Meeting on Monday, August 29th at 8:00pm. Their Open Mic Night will still most likely be on Thursdays at 8:00pm. The expected date to re-open is September 6, 2011, but that is subject to change.

If you have never been to Avenue L Coffee House, it is a non-alcoholic venue that regularly features live music (usually Indie/Folk/8bit electronic hardcore punk such as Yatagarasu), coffee, art, free Wi-Fi, and trendy people.

Good luck with your new location, Avenue L!

City of Huntsville seeking "Music in the Park" Talent

Are you in a band or know about one that is looking for places to perform in Huntsville?

The City of Huntsville is currently looking for local bands for its upcoming "Music in the Park" series. The City of Huntsville attempted to start the "Music in the Park" series during the summer but decided to push it back until September 15th due to the hotter than normal temperatures this summer has brought. Hopefully, the weather will not get in the way for the September 15th start date. This series will take place every Thursday from that start date until November 17th from 6:00pm until 8:00pm.

The possible locations include the following:
  • Rather Park
  • Jane Monday Amphitheater
  • Sam Houston Statue Amphitheater
  • Kate Barr Ross Park
All local artists or bands who are interested in being booked should contact Kimm Thomas at 936-295-5932. Call as soon as possible before all of the dates that are still available are filled by other local artists and groups! Don't be lazy and miss out on this great and most likely easy to book opportunity!
There are a lot of great bands in this town, and so the "Music in the Park" series will hopefully be very entertaining and feature many talented local artists!
