Spotlight: Educated Minds at Fatboys

On Thursday, April 21, 2011, I had the pleasure of attending the Educated Minds Album release Concert at Fatboys.
Educated Minds began their sound check to an almost empty room at about 7:30pm, but the deck and inside were filled when they officially began their set at 8:00pm.

The group consists of three members—Hubert Jones (my “grandbaby” and former Hastings minion), Desmond (fellow anime fan), and Derrick Woodley Jr. (D-Dubb)—with a little help with sound and set-up from Resard Westmoreland (Shart for short). It is obvious while watching this group perform that they enjoy working together. This trio has great chemistry, and the benefit of the live concert was discovering that not only does this group produce some excellent rap/R&B songs, but they are also improv comedians in between songs.

Another thing of note is that Fatboys is a good venue for bands searching for a place to perform, because they now open the glass doors allowing for more seating options. The outside patio is big enough that it doesn’t feel completely crowded even when there is a crowd, and it has both tables and couches which create a very comfortable environment. Plus, it is near the campus and other restaurants. There were many people walking by who stopped to listen to Educated Minds performance from the street.  The only downside for that night in particular was that their cooler was broken so their drink options were very limited, but their cheeseburgers and hot wings were both tasty and affordable, and the waitress was very friendly.

If you missed out on Educated Minds performance last Thursday, DON’T PANIC—they may live in San Marcos now, but they are usually back every six to eight weeks for another live concert. This was also the first stop of their Sensual Chocolate Tour, and so they will be playing in many cities near Huntsville in between that time.

LiquoReview: Sam Houston American Straight Whiskey

I went to Lone Star Liquor earlier to check out the taste testing of The Kraken rum. I intended to wrap my tentacles around that, but the Sam Houston whiskey caught my eye, so I bought it instead. Admittedly, I tend to buy things based on their packaging sometimes... and this was one of those times. I was also interested for the obvious reason of its name being "Sam Houston." The employees gave it good reviews, but I was skeptical.

Guess what, ladies and gents. It is pretty good. It is not as harsh as some whiskeys; it's pretty smooth. If you don't like the taste of Jack or Jim, you should give this a shot... or get away from whiskey altogether.

I have heard of Sam Houston Straight Bourbon Whiskey, but that comes in a bottle with a black label. Hmm. I'm not sure who actually made the blue label SH whiskey, but like I said, it is pretty decent. I purchased it for $24.99. Give it a go if the mood strikes you.

This isn't something I would drink all the time, but it would be a neat thing to serve at a SHSU-related event. You know, like at a graduation party or some-such.

Taste Test: Kraken Rum (@ Lone Star Liquor)

Hey, kids. RIGHT NOW, from 6 until 8p, at Lone Star Liquor (4004 B Sam Houston Avenue), you can taste test The Kraken black spiced rum. (For the record: I love the stuff!)

The employees have conjured up a drink they call "Mr. Squidward."

So... saddle up and go catch yourself some Kraken! For free!

Barstool BS: Lizard’s Open Mic host leaving?

While sitting at the Lizards bar last night, we couldn’t help but overhear a couple of regulars talking about the fate of Open Mic. The rumor they were discussing was that the long time host, Jarrod Sterret, would be moving his Open Mic to College Station in order to make more dineros. Looking around the quiet bar, it was easy to see this rumor being a fact.
Not satisfied with rumors, we asked Jarrod directly if this was true.
According to Jarrod, it is not true. HOWEVER, there is the possibility of him expanding his services to College Station and Houston. There are currently no confirmed venues, but College Station would be “lucky” to have Jarrod Sterret and his Open Mic team.
In related news, did you know that Open Mic on Tuesdays is now including karaoke? This is great news for the singing impaired who are unable to belt out a song without the words on the screen—but who still have the desire to be a star. Their catalogue of songs is currently limited, but they are constantly expanding and will take suggestions from the crowd to add to their list for the following week.
Next week they better have some Journey and Lucky by Britney Spears!
